Fairchild’s professional journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from The Ohio State University. Her path into the profession was shaped by determination and a willingness to pursue an opportunity that allowed her to transition from pre-med studies into physical therapy through a competitive certificate program. That decision ultimately launched a career spanning more than four decades.

Throughout her career, Fairchild gained experience across a broad range of healthcare environments, including hospitals, nursing homes, home care, and sports medicine. She held significant leadership positions, most recently as Director of Rehabilitation and Wellness Services at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital, as well as director-level roles at multiple medical centers.

In these positions, Fairchild was responsible for overseeing rehabilitation programs, developing care protocols, and working with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to support patient recovery and functional independence. Her experience also led to consulting opportunities in the development of some of the early sports medicine centers across the Eastern United States, where she worked alongside orthopedic surgeons and healthcare executives.

Beyond her clinical and administrative responsibilities, Fairchild made a lasting contribution to healthcare education through her work as a co-author of Principles and Techniques of Patient Care, a foundational textbook used in the education of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology students.

For more than two decades, Fairchild contributed to multiple editions of the textbook, helping provide generations of healthcare professionals with practical knowledge and foundational principles of patient care. Her work in clinical education complemented her hands-on experience and reflected her belief in preparing healthcare professionals to serve patients effectively.

When asked what she attributes her success to, Fairchild points first to her parents. She was the first person in her extended family, which included 10 aunts and uncles on one side and six on the other, to attend and graduate from college. Although her mother initially told her she would not be going to college, Fairchild remained determined, responding with confidence that she would. Her parents ultimately supported her decision once they realized she was committed to pursuing higher education.

Fairchild believes her parents gave her two qualities that remained central throughout her career: a positive self-image and self-drive. Their example of hard work and their encouragement to believe in herself helped shape the determination she carried throughout her professional life.

For young women considering careers in physical therapy, Fairchild encourages gaining firsthand exposure to rehabilitation before committing to the profession. She recommends finding opportunities to observe experienced therapists in rehabilitation facilities and learning what the work truly involves.

She points to leading rehabilitation institutions such as TIRR in Texas, Cleveland Clinic’s rehabilitation programs in Ohio, and the Rusk Institute in New York City as examples of environments where aspiring therapists can see the profession at its most demanding and rewarding. These facilities work with patients facing significant challenges while demonstrating the determination many patients have to regain independence.

Fairchild believes aspiring healthcare professionals should look beyond grades and develop the interpersonal and practical skills needed to connect with patients. Above all, she encourages young women to discover what they genuinely enjoy and then remain committed to it.
